Our careers are never set in stone; we can shape and mold them in a variety of ways, depending on the circumstances that we face. This includes taking advantage of our transferable skills to navigate career changes and to remain relevant in today’s world of work and digital space.

Transferable skills defined

Transferable or portable skills are proficiencies that are useful across different industries or roles. It can be applied in multiple industries and job functions, regardless of your specific role or field. These skills can help you adapt to changing circumstances and make you more attractive to potential employers. For example, if you are transitioning from a career in finance to a career in HR, you might be able to leverage your analytical skills and attention to detail to help you excel in your new role.

Restructuring/career shifts

When faced with downsizing, restructuring or career transitions, it is important to take a step back and assess your transferable skills. Think about the skills that you have developed throughout your career. Make a list of all the skills you possess that could be applied to a variety of roles and industries. These might include communication, leadership, problem-solving, time management, and project management, among others. Make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile prominently feature your transferable skills and be specific about how you have used these skills in your previous roles – in addition to leveraging transferable skills, endeavor to stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments.
